If you would like to forward a domain address that you have to another domain address or subdomain, one of the ways to do that would be to use a CNAME record. By setting up such a record, the domain name being redirected loses all its records (A, MX, and so on) and instead, it takes the A record of the domain address it's pointed to. By doing this, if you are using a web design service by some provider that gives you a subdomain, you can use an actual domain and not only will it be directed to the Internet site which you have created, but it'll also appear in the Internet browser address bar at all times. Other possible uses of a CNAME record are to direct all the visitors from various subdomains to their main domain, or to use the webmail service of your webhosting company by using webmail.your-doman.com, for instance. The latter will work only by creating a CNAME record for a subdomain because such a record created for the main domain address makes it impossible to use e-mail addresses.

CNAME Records in Web Hosting

Setting up a CNAME record with our Linux web hosting is very simple. Our in-house built Hepsia CP features a section committed to the DNS records of your domain names, so you can create a new CNAME record for any domain or subdomain hosted inside your account in a couple of simple steps. You'll find a video tutorial in the same section in which you can see the process first-hand. This feature provides you with a number of opportunities - if you set up a company site on our end, for instance, the staff can use their e-mails with the company domain name, not with the address of our mail server. If you want to create a website using a different provider which offers online web design services, you can easily redirect a domain hosted here and use it for the website. Last, but not least, if you have an online store and you have a billing system for http://your-domain.com and/or an SSL certificate, you can create a CNAME record for the www subdomain and point it to the main domain, so all your customers are going to be forwarded to a secure URL.

CNAME Records in Semi-dedicated Hosting

If you have a semi-dedicated server from our company and you would like to create a CNAME record, it will require only a couple of mouse clicks to complete this task. The plans are handled using our in-house built Hepsia hosting CP in which you will find a section dedicated to the DNS records of the domains and subdomains hosted inside the account. To set up a CNAME record, you will only have to choose the record type and the hostname (domain or subdomain), enter where the latter will be forwarded to and save the modification. The new record will be active almost right away in our system and will propagate worldwide within several hours. Modifying or deleting an existing CNAME record in the account is equally simple and easy and takes a click. If you experience any issues, you can go through our comprehensive help article, watch the short video on the subject that we have added in the CP, or you can just contact us for help.
